Presidents Report Round 1

Welcome to the first installment of the Crib Point Cricket Club News. Keep an eye out each week as we keep you updated with all of the latest club news, results and information.
We move into the 2013/14 year behind a solid pre-season with fantastic numbers at each and every session. There have been plenty of familiar faces, some returning players to the club and also a handful of newcomers to The Nest, including quality left hand batsman Luke Chapple.
The Club this year will be taking to the field with 4 senior teams, after making the decision to include a 4ths team to play in the C2 Division, which is a One Day competition. This will be added to the Provincial 1st, Provincial 2nds and A3 teams the club fielded last season.
Leading the Club once again for the 8th season in a row is Luke Herrington, with Michael Cook Captaining the 2nds, Heath Lacey Captaining the 3rds and Manny Beasley Captaining the 4ths.
On to Round 1 and with the weather playing havoc with quite a few grounds on the Peninsula we saw the Firsts and Seconds take on Baxter, while the 3rds were forced to take a draw with the Cyril Fox ground deemed unplayable. The fourths are due to start this week.
To the Firsts and what was a crucial game to start the season, Luke uncharacteristically lost the toss and Crib were thrown into the field.
Opening the bowling with young quick Waide Symes and veteran Glenn Barclay, Crib struggled with Baxter attacking from the outset quickly moving on to 0/58, when the breakthrough finally came from Barclay.
The attacking nature from the Baxter team continued and it was up to Club legend Henry Dolphin to pull the brakes on and tighten things up. Turning back the clock Henry finished with 2/15 from his 10 overs and was only outdone by the slow mediums of Brad Davidson who also bowled well, picking up 4/41 from his 10.
At the end of their 40 overs Baxter had set Crib a more than competitive 175 for victory.
Heading to crease to opening the batting Henry and Assistant Coach Matt Blake decided that attack was to be the best approach and set about quickly reducing the deficit. In a fantastic opening stand the two put on 140 for first wicket before Henry fell for 34.
With 35 to win and 9 wickets in hand, victory was in sight. However, when Blake departed agonisingly 4 runs short of his hundred for 96, things started to go little south. Crib lost a flurry of wickets to find themselves 7/171 with an over to go.
Not wanting to leave it down to the wire, Warren Herrington stepped up and dispatched the first ball of the last over into the cosmos with a 6 to give Crib victory and the all important 12 points.
The Seconds traveled to Baxter with a young side that is full of talent. Baxter won the toss and elected to bat and immediately Crib took control of the game and had the opposition reeling at 6/32. The chief destroyer was young Will Lanigan, who swung and cut the ball around early, tearing through the Baxter top order picking up 4/54 from 10 overs.
Baxter steadied the ship with a middle order recovery, but were bowled out in the 37th over for only 90. Along with Lanigan, the other wicket takers were, Shaun Blake with 2/15 and Dave Eaton and Mark Cairns one a piece.
Going into bat, openers Neil Clarke and Adam Keulen, both looking to make their way back into the top grade, made light work of the small target which Crib passed without loss. Keulen was eventually dismissed for 27 and Clarke a well compiled 60, with the team finishing the day at 2/99 off 28 overs.
All in all a sensational Round 1 for the club, with both teams competing well picking up those all important points early in the season.
